ADVAN – Born on the circuit

Unquestionable is the fact that the world competition series and tracks test drivers’ skills and capabilities, and we as spectators can only admire their talent and ingenuity to pass through the difficult situations and triumph with them on the podium. But as these same drivers confess, a successful performance depends on extracting the maximum from the qualities of the whole system pilot-automobile. In this system the driver and the vehicle as subsystems in contact with one another consist of elements which again are interactive and interdependent. Of course, if we draw our attention solely to the driver the factors that immediately arise are his capabilities as a human being and a person. As far as the automobile is concerned, these same factors also occur since its very existence is a result from the human creativity, skills and drive for development and they cannot be separated from the whole automobile construction in which the tires – the subject of our observation – play a significant role because they are the first to be in direct contact with the road through which the driver gets a notion about it which also interact with the other elements. Each braking zone exacts a heavy toll, each corner probes the limits of adhesion, each lap renders a verdict on how precisely and engineering theory matches performance reality. For over 25, one tire company’s technology has proven itself over and over, on the most demanding tracks and rally stages throughout Europe, Asia and North America, with unparalleled results: ADVAN from Yokohama.

1979 Japanese Touring Car Series
The first participation of Yokohama Rubber as a supplier of tires in the Japanese competition series was in 1963. But it would be true to say that the moment when the company started to realize how important motorsports could be in helping develop street tires that could outperform and outlast was a little more than 27 years ago, in 1978, when the brand ADVAN was launched. Naturally, the most relevant place for Yokohama to begin testing its new ADVAN performance tires was in the Japanese Touring Car Series. Fielding a Nissan Sunny and a Toyota Starlet – even then painted in the black and red livery that was to become a Team ADVAN trademark – Yokohama began the process of transforming its engineering, technology and manufacturing to meet the constantly rising demands of motor racing.

1983 Macau Formula 3 and Ayrton Senna
?he list of drivers who found international recognition early in their careers by winning the Macau Formula 3 race is filled with some of the most talented ever to zip up the Nomex: David Coulthard, David Brabham, Darren Manning, Andy Wallace, Sascha Maasen, and Ralf and Michael Schumacher, to name a few. But one name, that of the winner of the very first Macau F3 race, held in 1983, stands out beyond all others: Ayrton Senna. The future Formula 1 legend was just 23 at the time, but already his fierce talents was evident. Yokohama provided the spec tire for the Macau F3 race that first year, and it has proudly continued to serve as the spec tire for every Macau F3 race since. Future World Champions and some of racing’s most unforgettable drivers have used Yokohama tires as the measure of their performance.

1985 Le Mans 24 Hours Porsche 956
In just a few short years, Yokohama stepped onto endurance sports car racing’s grandest stage, the Le Mans 24 Hour. Beginning in 1923, Le Mans became the focal point of sports car racing, and it has established the reputation of drivers, cars and countries ever since. For one carmaker, in particular, Le Mans has meant everything: Porsche. The legend Porsche wasn’t born at Le Mans, but it certainly went to school there. And for Yokohama, Le Mans has played a similar role, educating the engineers of the company on just what’s required to compete at the highest levels of performance. When the Yokohama-equipped Porsche 956 finished third at Le Mans, in its first attempt, it was clear Yokohama could go tire to tire against just about anybody.

1988 SPA 24 Hours - BMW M3
Underscoring Yokohama growing dominance of the FIA Group A, Team Schnitzer drove their Yokohama ADVAN-equipped BMW M3 to victory in the 1988 Spa Francorchamps 24 Hour race. The Schnitzer M3 was driven across the finish line by Roberto Ravaglia, a full three laps ahead of the second-place finisher, a turbocharged Ford Sierra RS. In all, five of the top nine finishers were on Yokohama. And, in a race of attrition – less than half the field finished – six of the seven Yokohama-shod cars went the distance. Third place went to another M3 on Yokohama race rubber, the Team Bigazzi BMW, while the Nissan GTS-R of Nissan Motorsports Europe put in a dazzling series of super-fast charges to move up from 15th on the grid to take sixth at the checker in what has long been regarded as one of most respected events in all of endurance racing..

1989 Italian Touring Car Championship - BMW M3
In the last round of the 1989 Italian Touring Car Championship staged at Imola, the legendary track that is an annual stop on the Formula 1 circuit, a Yokohama ADVAN-shod BMW M3 walked off with the driver’s title, after a season-long battle involving many of the drivers who had fought so hard during the 1988 Spa 24 Hours. Johnny Cecotto, representing BMW Italia, amassed enough points to secure the championship, proving that the Ultimate Driving Machine and Yokohama tires make for an unbeatable combination. Both the tire and car were cementing their reputations as motorsports legends. The first-generation BMW M3 was truly a homologation special, a production sedan hand-built by BMW Motorsports specifically to compete in – and win – the national touring car series that were sweeping Europe and Asia. Today, the E30 M3’s are still popular choice among BMW club racers, and street versions command respect from BMW enthusiasts as the car that started the whole M3 phenomenon. What was left for the parthership of Team Schnitzer, driver Roberto Ravaglia and Yokohama tires to achieve in touring car competition? Whatever the format, they seemed an unbeatable alliance. The list of victories includes the 1987 World Touring Car and 1988 European Touring Car championships, the outright win at the Nürburgring 24 Hours (where Ravaglia partnered with Emanuele Pirro) and a class win in the Spa 24 Hours. Though its main rivals, the Ford Sierra and Mercedes-Benz 190-Class had superior horsepower, the Schnitzer M3s always seemed to capitalize on the car’s inherently neutral handling dynamics – a quality no doubt enhanced by the choice of Yokohama racing radials. Still, there was one thing left to claim: the German Touring Car Championship, one of the most coveted and closely contested of all the national touring car series. Team Schnitzer did not disappoint, as Ravaglia managed to keep his Yokohama tires under him and his rivals behind him, clinching the driver’s championship at the Hockenheim finale.

1989 All-Japan Sports Prototype Championship - Porsche 962
In Japan, team ADVAN continued to demonstrate the wisdom of putting the world’s most sophisticated example of Porsche engineering together with Yokohama technology. As it had done with the Porsche 956, Team ADVAN successfully campaigned its successor, the Porsche 962. among the most accomplished racing cars of all time, the Porsche 962 was the epitome of the FIA Group C cars – fast, beautiful and exotic. In the All-Japan Sports Prototype Championship for Group C, Team ADVAN clinched the season title in the last round at Suzuka, with Kuhimitsu Takahashi and Stanley Dickens sharing the honors. For Yokohama veteran Takahashi, it was his fourth All-Japan Sports Prototype Championship; for Dickens, it was his second. The pair also dominated that year’s All-Japan Touring Car Championship, with a 1-2 finish in BMW M3s sporting the bold black and red graphics of Team ADVAN – by then certainly the most widely recognized race livery in Japan.

1990 SPA 24 Hours - BMW M3
In a repeat of the 1988 Spa 24 Hours Win, Team Schnitzer carried the fortunes of BMW – and Yokohama – to victory, this time with the Johnny Cecotto/Fabien Giroix/Marcus Oestreich trio taking the win just ahead of Schnitzer teammates Christian Danner/Marc Duez/Dieter Quester. Once again, the challenge came from the turbocharged Ford Sierra RS, a car with a more powerful engine that enabled it to start on the pole. But the Sierra’s power advantage was ultimately rendered useless by the way the BMWs and their Yokohama tires, held up to the unusually hot weather that saw the track temperatures soar. Throughout the grueling twice-around-the-clock race, the Schnitzer BMWs and the Eggenberger Ford fought it out, but eventually the Sierra’s speed couldn’t make up for the extra pit stops. With their sticky but sturdy Yokohama race tires, Team Schnitzer was able to add another major international title to the resure of the BMW M3..

1990 Italian Touring Car Championship - BMW M3
With both the European and World Touring Car Championships no longer contested, driver such as Roberto Ravaglia – and tire manufacturers as a Yokohama – had to compete in the various national touring car series to prove themselves the best in the business. And that’s exactly the result achieved in the 1990 Italian Touring Car Championship. Driving his Schnitzer-prepared Team Italia M3, Ravaglia was simply too fast and too flawless for rivals like Alfa Romeo to compete with on a consistent basis. In 20 races, Ravaglia took seven first places and finished runner-up six times. Competitors like the Alfa 75 could not match the consistent performance displayed by the remarkable M3, its talented driver or its Yokohama race tires. For the Italian native, winning his home country’s touring car series was a highlight of Ravaglia’s driving career. For Yokohama, it was a chance to prove the durability of its products in front of some of the racing world’s most avid fans.

1990 Le Mans 24 Hours - Porsche 962C
At nearly eight-and-one-half miles, a lap of Le Mans is well deserving of its status as one of the great challenges in all of motorsports. Now try lapping it some 360 times over the course of 24 hours, and it’s easy to understand the value of racing at Le Mans. You can learn more about the quality of your engineering ideas in a single day than you will in a month spent on a conventional race track. There is simply no substitute for racing some 3000 miles in a single day, especially when you wind up on the podium. While a third-place finish in an ordinary race may not be anything to write about, it is at Le Mans. In 1990, Yokohama joined forces with a Porsche 962 to face Le Sarthe. The result? The privateer Alpha Racing team with drivers Tiff Needell, David Sears and Anthony Reid got to stand on the podium, and spray champagne all over themselves. Good thing their hair was covered by those Yokohama hats.

1991 Weissach Porsche
Weissach isn’t a race track, per se. It’s the test facility where Porsche does most of its research and development, and in 1991, Porsche AG engineers, working in close collaboration with Yokohama, completed tire tests that resulted in a significant achievement for Yokohama. Porsche approved the use of Yokohama’s advanced new A008P high-performance tires for all 1992 Porsche models. The 15- and 16-inch versions of the A008P had already been approved; now, with the official technical approval of the 17-inch version, Porsche owners could fit the appropriate A008P tires on their cars, secure in the knowledge that Porsche engineers recognized the ability of Yokohama tire technology to bring out the best in all Porsche models.

1992 Spa 24 Hours - BMW M3
Along with Le Mans and the Nurburgring, the other great European 24-hour endurance race is contested each year at Spa Francorchamps, site of the Formula 1 Belgium Grand Prix. Conquering the fearsome Eau Rouge is the key to a fast lap, and this race can go on for more than 500 laps. Eau Rouge is waiting each time, with its steep downhill run, then twisting left, hard right and uphill, then left again. If taken fast enough, a driver can outrun an opponent along the Kemmel into the Les Combes chicane. It takes a great driver, and a great deal of confidence in your tires, to perform well here. Steve Soper, generally acknowledged today as one of the greatest touring car drivers ever, failed to win the Spa 24 Hours 10 times before finally succeeding in 1992. His secret? Patience, a little luck, and a set of Yokohama tires that had his BMW M3 sticking through Eau Rouge like it was riding on rails.

1993 Nurburgring 24 hours - BMW M3
The circuit itself boggles the mind: A lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife measures 13 miles and tosses at you what are officially counted as 73 turns. Imagine your favorite mountain road and you favorite race track; combine the best of both and you’ll get ‘The Ring’. It is heavily used as a manufacturers’ test track today, and there is one major endurance race on it, the ADAC Zurich 24 Hours. In 1993, Yokohama was the tire of choice for the winning race car with driver Johnny Cecotto. But on many evenings, and a few weekends a year, it is made available for public use. Anyone can take their car or bike there and enjoy. The cost? Five laps will cost you about 60.00 Euro.

1994 IMSA/GTO - Nissan 300ZX
Few performance cars have ever shattered the status quo quite as fast as the Z, Nissan’s legendary sports car. When the original Z first appeared in 1970, it quickly became a sports car icon, winning Sports Car Club of America races along with the hearts of drivers. But during the next decade, the Z got, well, a bit lazy. A brand new design introduced in 1989, called the 300ZX, restored the Z’s sports car credibility – thanks to a little help from Yokohama. Led by Steve Millen, Johnny O’Connell and John Morton, the Clayton Cunningham-prepared, Yokohama-equipped Nissan Z dominated North America’s biggest endurance races: the Daytona 24 and the 12 Hours of Sebring. Over Sebring’s long, fast and notoriously bumpy circuit, the GT-class Nissan Z did something that hadn’t been done in 11 years, and hasn’t been repeated since: it beat out the prototype sports cars to claim the overall Sebring victory.

Yokohama Advan 1995 Le Mans 24 Hours - Honda NSX
While Honda-powered race cars had long been winner in Formula 1, the company wanted to transfer some of its race-bred technology into a street-legal, production-based GT car. Enter the Honda NSX. Considered to be a Ferrari-fighter, the NSX featured a body and suspension made from aluminium alloy. Its 3.0-liter V6 was also aluminum, and transverse-mounted mid-ship, right between the rear axle and passenger compartment. It was the perfect configuration for an awesome handling sports car, provided the tires were up to it. No problem: the NSX came Yokohama-equipped – with the same brand they took to Le Mans in 1995. Then the NSX proved that Honda engineering and Yokohama tires were a very potent formula. The NSX won the GT2 class at Le Mans with a team of drivers that included Keiichi Tsuchiya/Akira Iida/Kunimitsu Takahashi. Ferrari-fighter? The NSX, with Yokohama rubber, was ready to take on the entire sports car universe. Yokohama Advan

1997 Lime Rock WCS - Ferrari 333SP
Yokohama teamed up in the spring of 1997 with the MOMO/Yokohama Ferrari of Gianpiero Moretti to give the privateer his first World Sports Car win at Lime Rock. The Italian racing red, open-cockpit sports racer was a fan favorite everywhere it went. From Daytona and Watkins Glen to Lime Rock and Laguna Seca, the V-12 powered Ferrari 333SP delighted the ‘Tifosi’, the legion of fans loyal to the all things Prancing Horse. The Ferrari set-up on Yokohama racing rubber was undeniably quick, turning in eight of the fastest laps of the season. New compounds for the reliable Yokohama ADVAN tires helped the team wring every last drop of performance from the Ferrari 333SP, and the car led every endurance race it entered.

1997 Daytona 24 Hours - BMW M3
Among American-based race teams, few command the respect accorded Tom Milner and his Prototype Technology Group. Their stable of BMW M3s started to rampage across North American race circuits in 1997, taking both the GTS-3 category drivers’ and manufacturers’ titles in the Professional Sports Car Series. At the Rolex 24 at Daytona, Bill Auberlen, Boris Said, Javier Quiros, Tom Hassert and Derek Hill all had a hand in piloting the Yokohama/First Union BMW to victory circle. Later races during 1997 included sprints and shorter endures; Yokohama-shod PTG-prepped cars won all but two. And after Road Atlanta, the BMW M3 of Bill Auberlen and Boris Said got a change of livery to the distinctive red, white and deep blue Valvoline scheme that would become forever associated with the premier examples of the E36-era BMW M3 race cars. 1998 Rolex 24 Daytona - Ferrari 333SP
For the Rolex 24 at Daytona in 1998, Yokohama was again chosen to keep the World Sports Car Ferrari 333SP of Dr. Gianpiero Moretti glued to the famed Florida track. Good choice. The Yokohama tires held up to the extreme demands of Daytona’s steep banking, keeping their performance edge for the entire Rolex 24. For car owner Moretti and his co-drivers Didier Theys, Arie Luyendyk and Mauro Baldi, the overall win was an historic achievement. The MOMO/Yokohama/Ferrari 333SP was the first privateer Ferrari ever to win the Rolex 24. It was a convincing display in front of a reported 70,000 fans, as the Yokohama-shod Ferrari finished eight laps ahead of the nearest competitor to win the inaugural event of the United States Road Racing Championship. But that’s the kind of result you get when you put the advanced tire technology of Yokohama ADVAN under the legendary V-12 performance of a Ferrari.

2000 Le Mans 24 Hours - Porsche 911GT-3R
The Yokohama ADVAN-liveried Porsche 911 GT3-R of Team Taisan, a long-standing team affiliated with Yokohama, took top honors in the GT category of the 2000 24 Hours of Le Mans. Sponsored by Yokohama’s ADVAN brand, team drivers Hideo Fukuyama, Atsushi Yogo and Bruno Lambert finished 16th overall, but first in the LM GT class, clear winners by more than 82 laps over the second-place competitor. The #73 Porsche has entered numerous other Le Mans on behalf of Yokohama, and also has competed in Japan.

2001 Le Mans 24 Hours - Porsche 911 GT3-RS
Like most sports car races, the 24 Hours of Le Mans features several GT classes of competitors. While the front-running, super-exotic prototypes tend to get most of the attention, there are still fierce battles being contested further back in the pack. That’s especially true in the GT category. The class is made up mostly of Porsches, so with the machinery evenly matched, the tires can make a huge difference. That’s why 2001’s GT Class win for Yokohama was so gratifying. In what was the closest scrap for victory among any class at the 2001 Le Mans, the Seikel Porsche 911 GT3-RS driven by Fabio Babini, Luca Drudi and Gabrio Rosa used their Yokohama advantage to take class honors. A holed radiator during the night had put the team four laps down, but Babini spearheaded a fight back into the class lead, and the Yokohama-shod Porsche finished an amazing sixth overall.

2002 MACAU F3 -20th year for ADVAN
For Yokohama ADVAN, the 2002 Macau Grand Prix marked the 20th anniversary of its role as the official spec tire of the world’s most prestigious Formula 3 race. The first year of Yokohama’s association with Macau, the race winner was a young, up-and-coming Brazilian driver named Ayrton Senna. Since then, a veritable who’s who of open-wheel racing had climbed the rung labeled ‘Macau’ on their way to the top. It’s not an easy climb: the street course through the Asian equivalent of Monaco is tight and tricky, especially if the driver lacks any previous experience on the track or a teammate to provide advice on suspension set-up. Macau features a two-heat format, so the drivers get two opportunities to show what they can do on the their Yokohama-equipped F3 race cars. In 2002, French F3 champion Tristan Gommendy made the most of his talent by taking his Dallara-Renault to a narrow victory.

The 2003 Le Mans 24 Hour Race was another example of the important role this legendary test endurance has played in the development of the ADVAN story. One of the LMP 900 cars running in the race’s premier prototype class – the ADVAN KONDO S101 – debuted the newest expression of Yokohama’s performance tire technology. Raced on the Dome/Mugen LMP 900 entry, the racing rubber developed exclusively for ADVAN KONDO Racing proved to be just what you’d expect from and ADVAN tire: fast and reliable.

2003 Petit Le Mans - BMW M3 GTR
In 1978, Yokohama created ADVAN, one of the first performance brands in the tire industry. To celebrate the 25th anniversary, Tom Milner and his Prototype Technology Group brought Bill Auberlen, Boris Said and Hans Stuck to Petit Le Mans. These same drivers steered PTG’s Yokohama-tired, V8-powered BMW M3 GTR to victory in 2001. Auberlen started the 1000-mile race from fifth place and moved quickly into third. A failed front undertray put the team into the pits for repairs and cost it any chance for victory – but not the chance for Team PTG to remind fans why it’s one of the best endurance racing teams in the world. The trio of drivers charged back from last in class to finish fifth. “Speed and consistency is what you need from a racing tire”, added Said. “We got that today from Yokohama.”

2005 American Le Mans (ALMS) - Porsche 911Gt3-RSR
BAM! (British American Motorsport) finished a successful American Le Mans (ALMS) season at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca atop the podium with a third place finish. The BAM! Porsche 911 GT3R driven by Porsche factory drivers Mike Rockenfeller and Wolf Henzler took the lead on the green flag and led the early portion of laps after starting third in class. A pit stop strategy midway through the race did not pan out and the team found itself back in fourth place. A remarkable charge by Rockenfeller in the last thirty minutes of the race saw him erase a twenty-five second deficit to capture third place. In total for the 2005 season, the team finished with four podium finishes in ALMS competition and a 24 Hours of Le Mans GT2 class victory. The 2005 season – BAM!’s first season with Yokohama – encompassed the most successful series of racing since the team’s inception in 2004.
